SASSA Bank Consent Form Guide — SA

Last updated: 14 April 2026

The SASSA Consent Form for Bank Payment authorises the South African Social Security Agency to deposit your social grant directly into your bank account instead of collecting cash at a pay point. This guide covers every field on the form, what banking documents you need, which banks are accepted, and the most common mistakes that delay processing.

What documents do I need?

Gather these before you start. Missing or incomplete documents are one of the most common reasons applications are delayed or rejected.

  • Original South African ID document (Smart ID card or valid ID book)
  • Proof of banking details: original bank statement (not older than 3 months) or bank confirmation letter from your bank
  • SASSA grant approval letter or reference number
  • Completed SASSA Consent Form for Bank Payment (this form)

Step 1: Gather your documents

Before starting, you need your South African ID document, a bank statement or bank confirmation letter (not older than 3 months), and your SASSA grant reference number. The bank account must be in your own name — SASSA cannot pay into someone else's account.

Step 2: Fill in your personal details

Enter your surname and full names exactly as they appear on your ID document. Write your 13-digit ID number carefully — one wrong digit will cause the form to be rejected. Add your residential address, postal code, cellphone number, and email address.

Step 3: Fill in your banking details

Write the full name of your bank (e.g. Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, ABSA, Nedbank). Enter the 6-digit universal branch code — this is the same for all branches of the same bank. Mark the type of account (Cheque, Savings, or Transmission) and enter your account number.

Step 4: Sign and date the declaration

Sign the form and write today's date in CCYYMMDD format (e.g. 20260318). By signing, you confirm that the bank account is in your name and that you authorise SASSA to deposit your grant into this account.

Step 5: Submit the form at your nearest SASSA office

Take the completed form, your original ID document, and your proof of banking details to any SASSA office. A SASSA official will verify your identity and process the banking change. Keep a copy of the form and ask for a receipt or acknowledgement.

What are common mistakes to avoid?

  • Using a bank account that is not in the beneficiary's own name — SASSA requires the account to belong to the grant recipient
  • Entering the wrong branch code — use the universal branch code for your bank, not the old branch-specific code
  • Transposing digits in the account number or ID number — verify every digit against your bank statement and ID document
  • Not bringing an original bank statement or bank confirmation letter as proof of banking details
  • Submitting the form unsigned or undated — the declaration must be signed and dated

What tips will help my application succeed?

  • Most major South African banks use a universal branch code: Capitec (470010), FNB (250655), Standard Bank (051001), ABSA (632005), Nedbank (198765)
  • If you do not have a bank account, you can open a basic bank account (Mzansi account) at any South African bank with just your ID document
  • Banking detail changes typically take 30 to 60 days to process — your next payment after processing will go to the new account
  • Always keep a copy of the completed form and your submission receipt for your records
  • If your bank account is closed or becomes inactive, SASSA will revert your payment to the nearest pay point
