UI-2.8 UIF Banking Details Form Guide

Last updated: 14 April 2026

The UI-2.8 is the official UIF form used by employees to authorise the Unemployment Insurance Fund to pay benefits directly into their bank account. It is a required document for all UIF benefit claims — unemployment, illness, maternity, adoption, and dependant's benefits. Without a correctly completed UI-2.8, the UIF cannot process your payment even if your claim is approved. This guide walks you through every field and explains how to find your branch code and account details.

What documents do I need?

Gather these before you start. Missing or incomplete documents are one of the most common reasons applications are delayed or rejected.

  • Original South African ID document (Smart ID card or ID book)
  • Bank statement not older than 3 months (showing your name, account number, and branch code)
  • Or a bank confirmation letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name
  • Your UIF reference number or claim reference (if already registered)

Step 1: Gather your banking documents

Before starting the UI-2.8, you need a recent bank statement (not older than 3 months) or a bank confirmation letter from your bank. The statement must clearly show your full name, account number, and branch code. If you bank with Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, ABSA, or Nedbank, you can also obtain a confirmation letter via your banking app or by visiting a branch.

Step 2: Fill in your personal details

Enter your 13-digit South African ID number, surname, and full first names exactly as they appear on your ID document. Add your residential address, postal code, and contact telephone number. The name on the form must match both your ID document and your bank account — any mismatch will cause the form to be rejected.

Step 3: Enter your banking details

Write the full name of your bank (e.g. Capitec Bank, First National Bank, Standard Bank, ABSA, Nedbank). Enter the universal branch code for your bank — this is the same code for all branches nationwide: Capitec 470010, FNB 250655, Standard Bank 051001, ABSA 632005, Nedbank 198765. Then enter your account number and tick the type of account (Savings or Cheque/Current).

Step 4: Sign the authorisation declaration

Read the declaration carefully — by signing, you authorise the UIF to deposit benefit payments into the bank account you have specified. You also confirm that the account is in your own name and that the details provided are correct. Sign the form, print your name clearly, and write the date. An unsigned UI-2.8 will not be accepted.

Step 5: Submit the form with your UIF claim

Include the completed UI-2.8 with your other UIF claim documents (UI-2.1 application form, UI-2.7 remuneration record from your employer, and your ID document) when you visit the Department of Employment and Labour office. You can also submit via the uFiling portal (ufiling.labour.gov.za). The bank details on the UI-2.8 are where your approved benefits will be paid — ensure the account is active and in your name.

What are common mistakes to avoid?

  • Using a bank account that is not in your own name — the UIF requires the account to belong to the claimant. Joint accounts or third-party accounts are not accepted.
  • Entering the wrong branch code — use the universal branch code for your bank (e.g. Capitec 470010, FNB 250655, Standard Bank 051001), not the old branch-specific code shown on older statements.
  • Account number errors — transposed or missing digits in the account number will cause payment to fail or go to the wrong account.
  • Name mismatch between ID and bank account — the name on the form must match both your ID document and your bank account name exactly.
  • Not attaching proof of banking details — a bank statement or confirmation letter must accompany the UI-2.8 to verify the account details.
  • Leaving the form unsigned — the UIF cannot process an unsigned authorisation form.

What tips will help my application succeed?

  • Use FillMeIn's guided UI-2.8 tool to validate your ID number, check the branch code, and generate a clean PDF before visiting the Labour office.
  • Universal branch codes for major SA banks: Capitec 470010, FNB 250655, Standard Bank 051001, ABSA 632005, Nedbank 198765. These replaced the old branch-specific codes.
  • Get a bank confirmation letter from your banking app — most SA banks (Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, ABSA, Nedbank) let you download or email a confirmation letter directly from the app at no cost.
  • If you recently changed banks, update your UI-2.8 before your next benefit payment is due — the UIF pays into the account on file and failed payments cause significant delays.
  • Keep a copy of the completed UI-2.8 form — if your banking details change, you will need to submit a new UI-2.8 to the Labour office.
  • Ensure your bank account is active and not dormant — some banks deactivate accounts with no transactions for 6 months, which will cause UIF payments to bounce.
