What is the UIF and what does it cover?

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is a South African government fund established under the Unemployment Insurance Act (Act 63 of 2001). It provides short-term financial relief to workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own, as well as to workers who are unable to work due to maternity, adoption, or illness. Both employers and employees contribute 1% of the employee's monthly salary to the fund — 2% in total — which is collected by SARS. Who qualifies for UIF unemployment benefits in South Africa?
