Debit order dispute letter

Money taken from your bank account by a debit order you did not agree to, cancelled, or that took too much? Make a letter for your bank or the company. Free, and nothing is uploaded.

Act quickly: banks limit how long after a debit you can dispute it. Nedbank, for example, allows 60 days. Ask your bank which limit applies.

What happened

Who is the letter for?
What went wrong?

How it works

  1. Choose who the letter is for and what went wrong.
  2. Copy each debit from your statement or banking app: the date, the amount and the reference.
  3. Download or copy the letter and send it to your bank or the company. Ask for a reference number and keep it.

Common questions

Should I send this to my bank or to the company?

Your bank can reverse a debit order and stop further ones from the same company. The company can cancel the agreement and refund you. If you are not sure, make one letter for each: choose "My bank", download it, then choose "The company" and download again.

Is there a time limit?

Yes. Banks limit how long after a debit you can dispute it, so act as soon as you see it. Nedbank says on its help page that disputes after 60 days are no longer allowed. Other banks may have a different limit, so ask yours which one applies to your debit order.

What if I approved the debit order on my banking app?

Some debit orders are approved by you on your banking app, by USSD or by SMS (DebiCheck). A debit order you approved this way usually cannot be reversed through a dispute: the Payments Association of South Africa says not all DebiCheck debits can be reversed, and Nedbank says valid ones cannot be disputed. Contact your bank and the company about it.

Can I stop future debit orders?

Most banking apps let you stop or block a debit order, and the letter to your bank asks for it too. Stopping a debit order does not cancel what you owe if you do have a real agreement with the company, so cancel the agreement with them as well.

Money was taken from my airtime, not my bank account. Will this help?

No. This letter is for debit orders on a bank account. Subscriptions charged to your airtime are stopped through your mobile network.

Is anything I type uploaded or saved?

No. The letter is made on your device. Nothing you type is sent to us or saved in your browser, so it is gone when you close the page.
